NARHA
CENTERS PROVIDE EQUINE ASSISTED ACTIVITIES Just as other professions use accreditation and
licensing systems to improve the well-being of
their industries, therapeutic equine
professionals have a distinction of their own
thanks to NARHA’s Premier Accredited Center
Program. The Premier Accredited Center Program
offers NARHA centers the chance to demonstrate
their excellence in providing quality,
professional equine assisted activities. This
voluntary process recognizes NARHA centers that
have met established industry standards. The
accreditation process is a peer review system,
in which trained volunteers visit and evaluate
centers in accordance with NARHA standards.
Centers that meet the accreditation requirements
based on the administrative, facility, program
and applicable special interest standards become
Premier Accredited Centers for a period of 5
years. Centers must renew that accreditation by
the end of the fifth year.
NARHA Membership
Who can benefit from
being a member of NARHA? Everyone who believes in equine assisted activities!
NARHA is not just for Instructors and Centers offering equine
assisted activities and therapies (EAAT). Our
individual members include people of all ages with and without
disabilities.
NARHA OFFERS THREE LEVELS OF INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION
Registered, Advanced and Master. Specialty Discipline
Certification is also available for driving. Therapeutic riding
instructors that teach at NARHA Centers are required to achieve
(one level of) NARHA Instructor Certification status.
Instructors may apply for any level of certification that they
feel they are qualified to achieve, as long as the application
criteria for that level are met. The criteria at each level
details the skills and knowledge an instructor of that level
must posses regarding Equine Management, Horsemanship,
Instruction, Teaching Methodology and Disabilities. All
evaluations of instructor applications, at all three levels,
regardless of certification method, are based on these criteria. More>>
What are EFL and EFP?
EFL (equine facilitated
learning) is an educational approach that
includes equine facilitated activities
incorporating the experience of equine/human
interaction in an environment of learning or
self discovery. EFL encourages personal
explorations of feelings and behaviors to help
promote human growth and development.
EFP (equine facilitated
psychotherapy) is experiential
psychotherapy that involves equines. It may
include, but is not limited to, such mutually
respectful equine activities as handling,
grooming, longeing, riding, driving, and
vaulting. EFP is facilitated by a licensed,
credentialed mental health professional working
with an appropriately credentialed equine
professional. EFP may also be facilitated by a
mental health professional who is also
credentialed as an equine
professional

CARRIAGE
DRIVING IS A FAST GROWING SPORT
NARHA centers can offer
students with physical, mental, sensory, or emotional conditions the
rewards of interaction and control of a horse or pony while driving from
a carriage seat or in their own wheelchair. Using a horse and carriage
gives participants an alternative or an addition to riding,
opening up the world of horses to those who may be unable to ride due to
weight, balance, fatigue, fear of heights, the inability to sit astride,
or other issues.
