Near You: Camp Fairs Help Families
Learn About Their Camp Choices for
2008
It may be winter, but there's a way to
explore the summer camp experience very
close to home. From now into the spring, camp
fairs around the country are offering
parents and their children a fun and personal
way of asking their questions about the
benefits of camp and how to choose the
best camp for their needs.
Last year, more than 10 million children
and teens benefited from a camp experience;
families find that there are many options
to choose from. Parents considering summer
camp for their children can find resources
for their questions at one of the many
camp fairs scheduled throughout the U.S.
At a camp fair, campers and their parents
can speak with representatives from different
camps and camp organizations. The fairs
are open to the public and are typically
held in hotels, malls, or gymnasiums. Other
venues include churches, museums, and country
clubs.
Different organizations sponsor the fairs
and provide the opportunity, usually on
weekends, for busy families to spend time
asking about camp options.
Questions parents can ask and get information
about include:
- How to compare the differences between
a day camp or a resident (overnight)
camp
- Types of camps: private, religiously
affiliated, nonprofit
- Which camps offer activities related
to a specific interest (such as performing
arts or computers)?
- Are there camp programs that meet my
child's special needs?
- Camp costs and campership programs
- Length of camp sessions
- Age range of the campers who attend
- Location and special features of a
camp
Camp
fairs around the country can be found
in a searchable database by state in
the Ultimate Camp Planner at www.CampParents.org.
Parents can also learn whether a particular
camp is accredited by the American Camp
Association®. Over 2,400 camps are
accredited by ACA, the only organization
that accredits camps. To be accredited,
a camp must meet up to 300 standards – from
staff qualifications and training to emergency
management and program evaluation. These
camps can be located in ACA's searchable
database at www.CampParents.org.
Contact Public Relations at 765.349.3317 or pr@ACAcamps.org to
interview an ACA
spokesperson for more information on
different types of camps and how to select
a camp.
